Jan Kath is one of the world’s most in-demand designers of hand-knotted carpets and here at RugArt we are honoured to be the sole distributor of his rugs across the whole of Ireland.
In this blog, we take a closer look at his beautiful Polonaise collection, the inspiration behind it and the history behind the origins of Polonaise rugs.
What are Polonaise rugs?
Polonaise rugs also known as Polish rugs are handwoven rugs made from silk in Persia during the late 16th and 17th centuries. Shah Abbasi (1571-1629 AD) demanded the weavers in his royal workshop in Isfahan “make the most beautiful carpets in the world.” The result was delicately knotted designs made of silk interwoven with gold and silver thread. Vibrant and symmetrical while being elegant and enchanting. The designs fascinated Persian royalty but also the Polish court who commissioned a special order. This meant that the Persian designs were joined by European motifs including crests of the rulers. The first examples of this type of rug to be exhibited in Europe was in Poland during the 19th century. This led to the assumption that they were made in Poland which explains the origins of their name.
Traditional Polonaise rugs are boldly coloured and often enhanced with gold or silver wrapped strands of silk.
Of the few hundred surviving Polonaise rugs they are largely worn down to canvas with what remains of the silk fast flaking away and any metal features tarnished. They unfortunately retain little suggestion of their luxurious, flashy nature. Surviving carpets have largely been found in Europe where they were treasured by affluent families who would have received them as gifts or through trade.
Jan Kath’s inspiration
The most beautiful of the Polonaise rugs inspired Jan Kath to create his Polonaise collection. He expertly reconstructed the colours, added his own motifs and used the antique finishing process as well as adding typical Jan Kath signatures to add new highlights to the collection. Each of the 31 rugs in the Polonaise collection offer something different. If you’re looking for earthy tones with pops of gold then we’d recommend the Euston Aerial, if colour is what you’re after then the Eastcote rug is perfect with its bold orange and pink fringing.
